"Princess Resurrection" is an anime that I found surprisingly engrossing considering it has been completely unheralded. I ran into it by coincidence while searching for obscure vampire titles and it was just about love at first sight. For a show that seems to utilize nearly every anime convention imaginable, this one still manages to feel fresh by combining elements from all sorts of genres within the genre. The primary setting for the show is classic horror with broad swaths of comedy and it reminds me a lot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in it's approach. It's got the "monster of the week", a metric ton of homages for classic horror/sci-fi fans (including, of course, the Lovecraft incantation I used for the title of this review), recognizable archetypes that are allowed to revel in their roles to the point of parody, and a pretty bizarre sense of humor to tie it all together. This may not have gone over big with the masses, but it feels like it was made with me in mind... Read more

I actually wrote a review for the Japanese version of this as well, so I am simply posting it on the DUB version as well.

First off let me start this off by saying I have not read any of the manga for this series so I can't compare the two at all. All i can tell you is about the anime itself.

Well without any serious spoilers, (everything I am about to say happens in episode one.) We meet a boy named Hiro who seems like you're every day guy until he suddenly dies from being impaled by a steel beam. Oh did I mention he pushed the princess of the series out of the way, yeah that's important. Anyway Hiro saves her life by pushing her out of the way and he dies. The Princess (Hime) Brings him back to life as her royal servant with an ability known as the flame of life. This grants Hiro immortality as long as Hime is around, which binds the two together, master and servant.

From there each episode is more or less a stand alone, some sort of creature or... Read more

This is a review of the packaging, not the anime. The case these DVDs come in is a joke. Looks like a nice hard case, but when you open it the DVDs are all just stacked on one single spool with a big block of styrofoam on the other side to keep them from just banging around loose. It's just like a cheap pack of blank discs you would buy.
Really upset with this packaging. Sentai Filmworks really blew it on the packaging of this set.

    Product Description

Let’s break it down. Mugen’s a reckless sword-slinger with a style that’s more b-boy than Shaolin. He’s got a nasty streak that makes people want to stick a knife in his throat. Then there’s Jin, a deadbeat ronin who speaks softly but carries a big blade. He runs game old-school style, but he can make your blood spray with the quickness. When these roughnecks bring the ruckus, it ain’t good for anybody, especially them. Enter Fuu, the dizzy waitress who springs her new friends from a deadly jam. All she wants in return is help solving a riddle from her past. She and the boys are tracking the scent, but there’s ninety-nine ways to die between them and the sunflower samurai.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quietly Among the Best, April 9, 2011
This review is from: Samurai Champloo: The Complete Series (DVD)
If there ever was an anime series that will leave you saying "that was outstanding," this is it.

There are so many components to this story that make it so.

The artwork is gorgeous; the backdrops themselves seem to be characters in the story.

The music, which is a mash-up of house, hip-hop, blues and jazz, adds so much depth to each episode that you may feel compelled to buy one of the series' four soundtracks just as I did.

And then, there's the story itself: two rogue warriors - one who can barely control his emotions [Mugen] and another who is nearly emotionless -- the cipher (seemingly) without a soul [Jin] -- attempt to help a befuddled teenage girl [Fu] in her quest to find the "samurai who smells like sunflowers."

Yes, similar stories have been told in many different formats for generations, but this version seems so fresh. During the 26 episode arc, you will find yourself caring about the main characters and... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Improved from the last release, NEW UPSCALE!, July 8, 2011
      Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I won't go into detail about the series because this is a review of this particular release. The last Blu-ray release of this series was poorly upscaled, but it appears Funimation has fixed the problem and re-upscaled the video for this set. Since the show was animated in standard definition it will never look spectacular, but this new upscale is probably the best we will see. Unlike the last set, the film grain remains intact with very few visual flaws from the upscale. If you already have the DVDs there is no real need to upgrade, but if you are on the fence about buying either the DVD or the Blu-ray, get this Blu-ray release.

Samurai Champloo was one of those series I used to watch when I was at a young age during the time they aired on Adult Swim. I knew I loved the show, but I never really paid attention to the story since I was a kid back then. Watching it again in HD it is really beautiful to witness, you grow to love the main characters and I promise you won't regret watching this series. Samurai Champloo is on my Top 10 Anime List that I would want to watch again over a period of time.

      Spirited Away

      Description

From one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animated cinema comes the most acclaimed film of 2002. Hayao Miyazaki's latest triumph, filled with astonishing animation and epic adventure, is a dazzling masterpiece for the ages. It's a "wonderfully welcoming work of art that's as funny and entertaining as it is brilliant, beautiful, and deep" (Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal). SPIRITED AWAY is a wondrous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world. An unforgettable story brimming with creativity, SPIRITED AWAY will take you on a journey beyond your imagination. "To enter the world of Hayao Miyazaki is to experience a kind of lighthearted enchantment that is unique to the world of animation" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). It's a fantastic tale the whole family will want to experience over and over again.

The highest grossing film in Japanese box-office history (more than $234 million), Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro Kamikakushi) is a dazzling film that reasserts the power of drawn animation to create fantasy worlds. Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Lewis Carroll's Alice, Chihiro (voice by Daveigh Chase--Lilo in Disney's Lilo & Stitch) plunges into an alternate reality. On the way to their new home, the petulant adolescent and her parents find what they think is a deserted amusement park. Her parents stuff themselves until they turn into pigs, and Chihiro discovers they're trapped in a resort for traditional Japanese gods and spirits. An oddly familiar boy named Haku (Jason Marsden) instructs Chihiro to request a job from Yubaba (Suzanne Pleshette), the greedy witch who rules the spa. As she works, Chihiro's untapped qualities keep her from being corrupted by the greed that pervades Yubaba's mini-empire. In a series of fantastic adventures, she purges a river god suffering from human pollution, rescues the mysterious No-Face, and befriends Yubaba's kindly twin, Zeniba (Pleshette again). The resolve, bravery, and love Chihiro discovers within herself enable her to aid Haku and save her parents. The result is a moving and magical journey, told with consummate skill by one of the masters of contemporary animation. MPAA Rated: PG ("Some scary moments") --Charles Solomon

Spirited Away is yet another masterpiece from Japan's undisputed master of animation. Although I did not enjoy it as much as Princess Mononoke, I was more entertained by this film than by any Disney movie made in the past five years. Speaking of Disney, I thought I would clear up a few misconceptions that some people have concerning this film. Firstly, for those people who complain that Miyazaki's films (as well as other anime) are for adults, and not children, I should point out that Miyazaki has explicitly stated that Spirited was made for young girls. (in other words, Chihiro's age) This doesn't mean that the film can only be enjoyed by pre-pubescant girls (I myself am a 22 year old male); it just means that you should not go into this film expecting something geared towards adults, the way Mononoke was.
Now I have noticed several people on this site comparing Spirited to Disney. Everyone seems to agree that it is nothing like Disney, because it is scary. Some parents even go... Read more

Chihiro, a typical slightly spoiled ten year old girl, wanders off the beaten path with her parents, and is thrust into a bewildering otherworld. Her parents have soon fallen under a malign enchantment, and suddenly it falls to her, with the aid of a mysteriously familiar boy named Haku, to rescue them. She has to decide where to place her trust, as it becomes apparent that Haku is in the service of the villainous tyrant grandmother Yabubu, who rules over this otherworld.

It is Chihiro's spirit that steers her through these uncharted waters. We watch her discover in herself and exhibit, tentatively at first but with growing confidence, all of the virtues a fairy-tale hero must learn: resourcefulness, compassion, politeness (hey, this *is* Japanese!) and courage. Because we've witnessed her ordinary beginnings, we identify with and believe in all her emerging qualities. It's all done with a deft matter-of-fact touch that never cloys and never preaches. The animation is quietly... Read more

      5.0 out of 5 stars A Lesson For Disney, March 13, 2003
This review is from: Spirited Away (DVD)
While Major Hollywood studios believe the audiences are tired of watching plain hand-drawn cartoons and began to incorporate more special effects into 2-D animation, yet with disappointing results (Titan A.E., Atlantis, and the most recent Treasure Planet), they have almost totally given up on traditional animation, and focus on producing 3-D computer animation. After a series of successful and charming CG cartoon, one could not help but to wonder: is this the end of hand-drawn cartoon artists? (some may argue that they could get the job as storyboard artists)

The point that they are really missing is, what is missing from the recent 2-D animation features, is not the blasting visual effects, or floor cracking sounds. The real thing that is missing from them is a "heart".

See "Toy Story", "A Bug's Life", and "Monsters, Inc." (all produced by Pixar Studio, who is, in the writer's opinion, superior than their rival competitors), while they are indeed visually revolutionary, the... Read more
