5.0 out of 5 stars Anime sci-fi at its finest, September 5, 2006
    By
This review is from: Crest of the Stars - Anime Legends Complete Collection (DVD)
I'm surprised at how often this classic anime is overlooked by even the most dedicated anime fans. Crest of the Stars is the first installment of the Stars collection (Banner of the Stars, and Banner of the Stars II being the other two). This anime mainly focuses on the building of the relationship between the Abh princess Lafiel and the up and coming human, turned Abh, Count Jinto and the events leading up to the intergalactic war between the Abh Empire and the United Mankind.

This is a wonderfully told story filled with many dramatic moments ,some good laughs, and a nice score that help add to the epic feeling of the series. The relationship between Lafiel and Jinto is developed beautifully and found myself being pulled into their world almost completely absorbed in what was happening.

Even you're not into sci-fi at all I'd say there's still a good chance you will enjoy this anime.

There is also Banner of the Stars 1 and 2 which focus mainly... Read more

Finally a truly perfect series. Yes Crest of the Stars is perfection. The only flaw if you can call it that is the somewhat slow story progression. I personally prefer the pace as it gives you time just to get to know the characters. This series nearly perfectly balances plot and character development. The technology is believable and the cause for the resent of the rest of mankind towards the ahb is somewhat understandable. The music is incredible with the exception of the opening theme which just seems out of place. The ending theme in particular deserves note, I honestly didn't realize that a male human voice in any language could sound so torn up. The story is interesting and is constantly changing course. Character development is where this series truly shines, both main characters are so believable that you could easily walking up to them on the street and carrying out a conversation. All in all you do not have an excuse not to buy this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A series that I simply fell in love with and could not stop watching., August 8, 2008

For years, I've read and heard of how awesome the "Crest of the Stars" and "Banner of the Stars" series are and while I take a break from my "watch every Gundam series" marathon, I decided to purchase "Crest of the Stars" and "Banner of the Stars" and find out for myself why people enjoy this series.

This series could have been the sci-fi cliche of aliens go to planet, aliens threaten inhabitants of planet, inhabitants fight back and war ensues.

But fortunately, "Crest of the Stars" doesn't go there.

"Crest of the Stars" is the first part of a trilogy based on the manga written back in 1996 by Morioka Hiroyuki. The manga was adapted to 13-episodes and featured on WOWOW back in 1999.

The anime was released in the US by Bandai Entertainment in 2001 and later aired on television on TechTV in 2002.

The story primarily focuses on two characters, terrran Jinto Lin and an Abh named Lafiel.

The first episode starts... Read more

"Princess Resurrection" is an anime that I found surprisingly engrossing considering it has been completely unheralded. I ran into it by coincidence while searching for obscure vampire titles and it was just about love at first sight. For a show that seems to utilize nearly every anime convention imaginable, this one still manages to feel fresh by combining elements from all sorts of genres within the genre. The primary setting for the show is classic horror with broad swaths of comedy and it reminds me a lot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in it's approach. It's got the "monster of the week", a metric ton of homages for classic horror/sci-fi fans (including, of course, the Lovecraft incantation I used for the title of this review), recognizable archetypes that are allowed to revel in their roles to the point of parody, and a pretty bizarre sense of humor to tie it all together. This may not have gone over big with the masses, but it feels like it was made with me in mind... Read more

I actually wrote a review for the Japanese version of this as well, so I am simply posting it on the DUB version as well.

First off let me start this off by saying I have not read any of the manga for this series so I can't compare the two at all. All i can tell you is about the anime itself.

Well without any serious spoilers, (everything I am about to say happens in episode one.) We meet a boy named Hiro who seems like you're every day guy until he suddenly dies from being impaled by a steel beam. Oh did I mention he pushed the princess of the series out of the way, yeah that's important. Anyway Hiro saves her life by pushing her out of the way and he dies. The Princess (Hime) Brings him back to life as her royal servant with an ability known as the flame of life. This grants Hiro immortality as long as Hime is around, which binds the two together, master and servant.

From there each episode is more or less a stand alone, some sort of creature or... Read more

This is a review of the packaging, not the anime. The case these DVDs come in is a joke. Looks like a nice hard case, but when you open it the DVDs are all just stacked on one single spool with a big block of styrofoam on the other side to keep them from just banging around loose. It's just like a cheap pack of blank discs you would buy.
Really upset with this packaging. Sentai Filmworks really blew it on the packaging of this set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny show, but not how you'd think, December 12, 2010

When reading a synopsis for the series, one is struck by the weirdness of the concept. Junpei, the main character, is allergic to cats. By accident, he breaks the local cat-deity statue at a shrine, cursing him. Suddenly, he can understand what cats are saying, and must do 100 nice things for cats or he will turn into one himself. Being allergic, turning into a cat would kill him.

But that isn't really what the show is about. It is a slice of life anime heavy on the romantic comedy, following Junpei in his quest to become closer to his crush, Mizuno. As in most anime of this genre, complications are abound and more than one girl besides Mizuno falls for Junpei, setting up some very amusing situations. Sure, the concept has been done to death (besides the cats) and these types of anime are a dime a dozen. But that doesn't stop this show from being very, very funny.

The characters are really alive. There are some seriously good one-liners in this series, and... Read more

In 2007, the manga "Nyan Koi!" by Sato Fujiwara was serialized in the free web comic "FlexComix Blood" and two years later, the manga receives its anime adaptation from AIC and makes its DVD debut in the US courtesy of Sentai Filmworks.

The series is directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi (Kowarekake no Orgel", "Sket Dance", "Hayate the Combat Butler"), screenplay by Shinichi Inotsume ("Kowarekake no Orgel", "Hayate the Combat Butler", "Sket Dance") and features music by Manabu Miwa and Shigenobu Ookawa. Character designs are by Kazuaki Morita ("My Bride is a Mermaid", "Tentai Senshi Sunred") and art direction by Naoko Kosakabe ("NieA 7', "Kissxsis", "Jinki: Extend").

"Nyan Koi!" is a series about a high school sophomore named Junpei Kosaka and he is allergic to cats. So, much that he hates them and one day, he thinks he hears his cat Nyamsus talking to him but dismisses it.

As for Junpei, he is always dreaming about his friend Kaede Mizuno and wishes... Read more

Don't let the box art confuse you, this isn't an ecchi show. It's the poor man's Seto no Hanayome, which is to say that there's a lot of goofing around, a plot that provides a cheap excuse for said goofing around, and a quick resolution at the very end for an easy, open ending (sequel please!). The show is NOT dual-audio, which is good - there are a lot of things referenced, like ganguro and yakuza, that simply don't translate well. If there's any complaint, again, it's the box art - I have to hide this behind the other DVDs simply because it looks like cheap anime hentai or something.
